July 15, 2010 Dear Friends, It’s another of our e-bulletins, sent every other week with good news and information on upcoming activities in the Southern California Mission Center. Please send us your good news…we can never have too much! And thank you for all you do in the service of God's people.
Good News: “Bringing Down the Walls”After receiving feedback from attendees of last summer’s SCMC reunion (via evaluations) and from people in SwIMC (via pastors), the decision was made to combine our two reunions. The positive response to this prospect came despite the failure of the proposed merger late last summer. As this year’s reunion approached, I looked forward to the experience although there were some lingering concerns. Would the tensions that would inevitably occur with the combining of two traditions somehow overcome the goodwill? Right from the beginning afternoon, it was apparent that the Spirit that unites us would lead the way throughout the week. In more than one situation, when individuals learned they would have to accept accommodations other than what they had requested (just one of the challenges of combining reunions), the response was one of grace and flexibility. People were willing to let go of their own wishes for the sake of community. And it was like that all week long. One camper who came to Buckhorn for the first time remarked that, had they not known that this was the first joint reunion of the two groups, they would have thought we were sharing reunions for years. Another longtime camper commented: “This experience will last longer for me as I reflect on reunion and the spirit of cooperation that existed between both M.C.’s.” In his sermon, Apostle Scott Murphy reminded us of how Jesus tore down the dividing walls between us (Ephesians 2). That it is we that continue to put them up. And even then, when we choose to allow it, the Spirit can still bring them down. It’s true that it is far easier to leave those walls down while in a place like Buckhorn and in an experience like Reunion, but it shows us once again what God desires for us. May we continue to be aware of the Spirit, so evident at Reunion, and allow it to tear down the walls that separate us from one another and from other members of God’s creation.
